What is the white fuzz on my sprouts?

The white fuzz are root hairs!

They are nutrient superheroes that enhance growth & absorption.

Root hairs, also called ‘cilia’ are a biological function of sprouts and are a normal part of the root system. Despite their microscopic size, these tiny hairs play a crucial role in drawing water and nutrients to deliver back to the growing sprout. Root hairs are a good sign to let you know that I am growing and living!

They are not to be confused with mould, which is a type of fungus that tends to grow when your sprouts are suffering from inadequate or poor environmental factors.

How to spot the difference between root hairs and mould:

If you’re unsure about whether the white fuzz is root hairs or mould, here are our top tips to work out which one you’re dealing with:

  • Try gently spritzing some water over the top of your sprouts. If they are root hairs, the white fuzzy look will disappear.
  • Root hairs are most common on younger sprouts. They are always white and grow in the same direction, outwards from the root.
  • Mould can be different colours like grey and black.
  • If you can’t see the difference, try the ‘sniff’ test: root hairs have no scent while mould will smell musty.
  • Roots hairs will appear among healthy sprouts, whereas mould is more likely to appear once roots are looking unhealthy or turning brown
