Pea sprout sprouting seeds - Microgreens
Pea sprouts are one of the easiest microgreens to grow. The pea sprout microgreens are ready to harvest when they display their first two true leaves.
Pea sprout microgreens taste like the mature peas that are in season in the summertime. The leaves are velvety soft and the stems are crunchy.
They are filled with vitamin A, C, folic acid, beta carotenoids, and antioxidants.

Store purchased soil. Repurposed containers or microgreen trays. Option to use sprouting jar to start seed germination before sowing in the soil.
How to grow pea sprout microgreens in soil with take-out containers
Find three containers of the same size and shape. Use the shallow rectangle sized take-out container if available. The aim is to convert the containers into a growing pot with a saucer to catch excess water and a growing pot cover.
Take one container and punch a few holes for drainage – this is your grow pot.
Use store purchased potting soil only. Optionally, add ¼ to ½ parts of coconut peat to the soil.
Tip for measuring the correct amount of seeds for any sized container: add a thin layer of seeds into the container without overlapping. Then, remove 20% of the seeds. The seeds will swell during the soaking stage so this will ensure there will be enough room for the seeds to grow without overcrowding.
Take the measured seeds and germinate them using the jar sprouting method for 24-36 hours. The seed jar sprouting method will save 2-3 days of growing time. Also, the pre-soaking helps the microgreens to grow evenly and produce a higher yield. Continue sprouting the seeds till white dots of the tails appears.
As the seeds are being prepared, start prepping the soil. Fill the container with potting soil to within an inch of the upper rim. Add water to saturate the soil, have it moist and ready for sowing.
When the seeds are ready, drain and sow the seeds. Drain the seeds well. When seeds are too wet they may stick together and make it difficult to scatter. Scatter the seeds evenly over the soil.
Spray a light mist of water over the seeds to help them embed into the soil. Cover the newly planted seeds with the 3rd container by turning it upside down, creating a “mini-greenhouse” effect. Alternatively, use a paper towel to cover the seeds and give a good misting of water straight through the paper towel to help the seeds take to the soil.
Keep the soil moist with regular misting of water throughout the full growing process.
Day 3-5: Short, white tails will have emerged. At this stage, the tails/roots will naturally turn into the soil to start establishing the root system. Extra watering may be needed at this stage.
Day 6-9: the seedling will be standing upright and look like mini trees. Remove the cover/paper towel and let them continue to grow. Please place the container in a well-lit area so they can start photosynthesizing and developing their first set of true leaves.
If the container has not allowed for a good cutting angle, lift the microgreen out of the container. Using a knife or a pair of scissors to clip the microgreens 1cm above the soil level.
Any extras can also be stored in a lidded container.
Do not reuse the soil. Add the soil into your garden for extra nutrients.
