Okay, okay, we’re not going to fib. When a recent issue of Nourish Magazine (Volume 8, No. 2) came across our desk, we were grinning from ear to ear. In particular, a simply wonderful feature article from writer Holly Johnson celebrating sprouts in all of their considerable glory.
It seems almost every month sprouts are receiving more attention in the national media. Why? Because Australia is slowly waking up to what we’ve known for decades at Sydney Sprouts – while they may only be small, sprouts are mighty when it comes to taste, nutrition and general wellbeing.
In the Nourish Magazine article, Holly Johnson begins with a short history lesson, explaining the ancient origins of sprouting over 5,000 years ago and the way freshly-grown sprouts were often used to help prevent scurvy during the marathon sea voyages of 1700’s. She then goes on to discuss, quite beautifully, the almost endless benefits of growing your own sprouts at home and why they really are one of Mother Nature’s purest superfoods. In fact, such are the nutritional riches of sprouting seeds, nuts, grains and beans, Johnson even dubs them ‘little green miracles’!
It’s isn’t all just science and theory, though. The article ends with six super simple steps for growing your own sprouts at home – if you haven’t tried it yet, you really should – and even includes some deliciously creative recipe ideas that we can’t wait to try out for ourselves. We’re particularly intrigued by her suggestion for a sprouts breakfast smoothie. Yummmmmm.
